Kemuning
(Folktale from East Java)
Kemuning and her mother live in a
jungle. They are poor. Kemuning
always helps her mother collect woods in the jungle and sell them
in the market. A cord of mixed hardwood is
$5 . She sold one or two cords a day. One day,
Kemuning's mother is ill.
Kemuning is very sad because she does not have enough
money to buy medicine. She then collects many woods. While She collects the woods, Kemuning meets her animal friend, the
rabbit. Kemuning tells the problem to the rabbit.
"I
can help you. Take this ring and then sell it," says the rabbit.
"Is
this your ring?" asks Kemuning.
"No.
This is the King Ngarancang Kencono's ring. It fell when he was hunting
here," answers the rabbit.
Kemuning hesitates. She says,
"No, I have to return this ring to the king."
Kemuning then goes to see the king at
his palace. It is far from

is your name and what is your purpose here?" says the king.
"My
name is Kemuning. I want to return your
ring," answers Kemuning.
"Thank
you very much. Now, I want to give you something. What do you want?" asks
the King.
"I
don't want anything. I just want to go home. My mother is very ill," says Kemuning.
"You
are a very kind girl. Now, take this gift," The King gives
something to Kemuning.
Then
Kemuning goes home. When she arrives, Kemuning tells her mother about the
king's ring. Her mother is very proud of her. When they open the
gift, they see a small bag full of gold coins. They are very
happy because they can buy medicine and some food.

the story Kareem and answer the questions below!
Kareem
Once upon a time, there was a
small village in Baghdad. Its population was very small. In this village
everybody knew each other and knew every little or big problems that went on in
the village. In this small village there was a bakery that was popular for its
delicious bread.
One day a poor old man was
walking in the street passing the bakery. He stopped to smell the scent of the
bread which was spreading out of the bakery.
Suddenly, the baker caught the
old man and shouted at him demanding the price of bread's scent. He almost
dragged him to the police.
A very famous wise man named
Kareem heard the baker shouting. So he went to him and asked about the problem.
Kareem stood calmly listening to the baker and he thought for a solution.
After a few minutes Kareem's
eyes glistened and an amused smile was on his face. He asked the baker
"How much money do you want?".
The baker and poor man were
astonished, but the baker answered "3 dinars".
Kareem took the money out of
his wallet and put it in his pocket and shook the money. "Did you hear the
sound of the money?" Kareem asked.
"Yes, I did", the
baker replied, and with big smile Kareem said "Well then, this is the
price of your bread's scent!"
